Te Haerenga is an immersive waiata experience that uses audio-reactive visuals and storytelling to explore healing, cultural connection, and environmental restoration through collective participation.

PROBLEM

Te Haerenga is an interactive waiata sing-along experience inside a hydroswing container, where audio-reactive visuals of polluted whenua respond to collective singing from tamariki and whānau. The work uses sound and visual storytelling to support the regeneration of Te Ara Tukutuku through immersive participation.

PROCESS

This reciprocal exchange informed key creative decisions and strengthened the overall direction of Te Haerenga as an immersive, community-engaged project.

This process was collaborative and iterative, shaped through ongoing feedback and engagement with Auckland Urban Development Organisation.

Regular kōrero and critique sessions refined the experience to align audio-visual storytelling with audience experience and spatial intent.

OUTCOME

The stack box wayfinders guide participants through the experience, with each face revealing information on who Te Haerenga represents and also Te Aratukutuku. Also highlighting the Purapura Whetū pattern, reflecting legacy, community strength, and intergenerational connection in Te Haerenga.

The merchandise carries the same visual language as the animation experience, extending its identity beyond the installation.

impact

Te Haerenga creates an immersive space where sound and shared interaction bring audiences together, turning participation into a collective experience. It strengthens emotional connection through audio-visual storytelling, encouraging active engagement and leaving audiences with a deeper sense of impact and connection to the experience.
